Gurman discussed how Apple plans to step up its game with iOS 18 with generative AI capabilities, as the next iPhone won't have many attractive features. He writes:
“Apple’s next generation of software – iOS 18 and other operating systems due next year – is even more critical than usual. The company is racing to catch up to Google and OpenAI in generative AI, and iOS 18 is poised to bring that technology to the iPhone. The iOS update also needs to be extremely impressive because the iPhone 16 hardware won't see major advances next year.”

Interestingly, the iPhone 16 series was expected to bring an “iPhone Ultra” iteration, which may not help. Rumors talk about improved processors, cameras and connectivity, with better advances in Wi-Fi and 5G – but that may not be enough to make users upgrade.
